Wobbly Steps Toward a Dream

Wobbly Steps Toward a Dream

Some days, the weight of the world feels like it's pressing down on my chest. Living with Major Depression and Generalized Anxiety Disorder is a relentless battle—one that doesn't offer a break. When you throw sleep apnea into the mix, it's like my body and mind are in cahoots to keep me perpetually exhausted. But here I am, stubbornly pursuing a dream: Trying to launch a nonprofit.

Believe me, it's not a walk in the park. Depression whispers that I'll never succeed, that my efforts are futile. Anxiety screams at me to double-check every decision, second-guess every move, and overthink every outcome. The physical fatigue from sleep apnea makes even small tasks feel monumental. But my vision keeps me moving forward.

It's hard to find the motivation when depression saps your willpower. Sometimes, brushing my teeth feels like climbing a mountain, yet I'll sit at my desk trying to draft a mission statement or research grants. It's slow going, but progress is progress, right?

Then there's the anxiety. Oh, the anxiety. What if I say the wrong thing? What if they ignore me? What if, what if, what if? Anxiety is like a broken record playing the worst-case scenarios on repeat.

Sleep apnea is the wildcard in all of this. My body often needs to catch up even when I'm mentally ready to tackle the day. Waking up unrefreshed after a whole night's sleep is frustrating beyond words. The brain fog is real, and it's a daily fight to stay present and productive.

Throughout this journey, I've learned to celebrate the little victories. Completing a task, no matter how minor, is a win. Making it through the day without spiraling into self-doubt is a win. Sharing my story, as vulnerable as it feels, is a win.

To anyone else out there juggling mental health challenges while chasing a dream, you're not alone. It's hard, but it's worth it. Keep going. Take it one step at a time. And remember to celebrate how far you've already come.

So, can you tell me if I can do this—one wobbly step at a time, or will I die first?

Turning Broken Items into Unique Creations: A DIY Journey

Turning Broken Items into Unique Creations: A DIY Journey

Sometimes, when things break, tossing them out and moving on is easy. But then, there are those moments when a little creativity sparks, and you think, "Why not fix it and make it even better?"

That's precisely what happened with a cheap dollar store vase that had been sitting on my desk for a while. It wasn't anything special, but I'd given a personal touch to it. I coated it in purple resin, which gave it a pop of color and made it look more exciting. It wasn't a high-end item, but I loved having it around.

Then, as it often goes with pets, disaster struck. Curious and always into mischief, my partner's cat knocked the vase off the desk. When I found it, the vase was in pieces. At first, I was bummed out, but I wasn't ready to say goodbye just yet. I've always enjoyed getting crafty, so I decided to try something fun and see if I could turn this broken vase into something even cooler.

The "Fixing" Process

Now, fixing things can sometimes mean making them look brand new. Sometimes, it means embracing imperfections and turning them into art. I started by gluing the vase pieces back together as best as possible. It could have been better, but I liked giving it a second life. After that, I decided to add a bit of texture and structure with paper mâché. It took a while to get the paper mâché layers just right. Still, something oddly satisfying about slowly building up layers and watching it all come together.

This project stage was a bit more time-consuming than I anticipated, but I knew it would be worth it once I got to the fun part—the painting.

Adding the Fun Stuff

It was time to start painting once the paper mâché was dry and set. I went with a deep purple for the base, which I had always loved and felt would boldly bring the piece back to life. But I didn't stop there. I decided to give it a little gothic-inspired flair. I had this set of Halloween-themed napkins with skull prints, so I cut one of the skulls out and carefully applied it to the vase using Mod Podge.

The bold purple and the skull design gave the vase an edgy, eclectic vibe that was beautiful. I was thrilled with how it turned out. In fact, I liked it so much that I decided to try the same technique on something else.

Repurposing a Trinket Box

I had this tiny, cheap, heart-shaped trinket box sitting around, gathering dust. I wasn't attached to anything, but it could be the perfect candidate for my next DIY project. I painted it in the same bold purple that I had used for the vase and used the same Halloween napkin skull, creating a nice little matching set.

The Joy of Crafting with a Twist

A simple attempt to fix a broken vase became a creative journey. I went from a cheap item with a purple resin coat to a completely personalized and fun piece of art. The best part? It didn't require expensive materials or fancy tools—just a little glue, paper mâché, paint, Mod Podge, and imagination.

It's funny how a mishap with a cat can lead to an exciting and rewarding project. It reminded me how satisfying it is to take something old or broken and give it a new purpose. Whether it's a vase, a trinket box, or something else, embracing creativity and finding joy in crafting can turn even the most ordinary items into something special.

So next time something breaks, or you have an item that doesn't quite inspire you anymore, it's time to grab some glue and get crafty. You never know what kind of unique creation you might end up with!
